Quack!: To the Moon and Home Again
by Arthur Yorinks with illustrations by Adrienne
Yorinks.
(Abrams, 2003)
|
|
Quack, a little pink duck, is feeling adventurous,
so after looking through his telescope, he decides to take a trip
to the moon. This quirky story is written in "the international
language of Ducks." The colorful, full-page illustrations were created
from hand-sewn quilts. Each fabric collage is a rainbow of different
colors, including soft purples, blues, oranges, greens, reds, and
yellows, and the artist has worked an amazing amount of expression
into each animal's face, from the pink crocodiles to the forlorn
raccoons. Although this is an odd duck of a book, very young children
will love saying the word quack over and over again, and may be
speaking the language of ducks for hours after reading the story.
Quack! won the 2003 Parents' Choice Award! Quack!
was also selected as a winner of the 2003 National Parenting Publications
Awards (NAPPA). NAPPA
is one of the country's most authoritative consumer-award programs
recognizing the best in children's and parenting resources.

The Last Will and Testament of an Extremely
Distinguished Dog
by Eugene O'Neill
(Henry Holt, 2001)
|
|
In the early 1940s, famed playwright Eugene O'Neill
wrote a moving piece of prose about his dog, Silverdene Emblem O'Neill
(Blemie). In The Last Will and Testament of an Extremely Distinguished
Dog, he eloquently articulates what all dog lovers feel as their
canine companion nears the end of life. Twenty-five machine-pieced
and hand-stitched quilts beautifully illustrate his elegy, with
color photographic transfers of dogs.

"This unique 'atlas' surprises the user by presenting
geographic facts visually on quilt squares. Each striking square
focuses on one county."
"Countries from A to Z are listed in this charming,
educational book that takes children on a trip around the world.
Adrienne Yorinks's wonderful illustrations are actually intricate
quilts that tell even more about the country they accompany."
-- Today's Librarian
"This alphabet of countries makes as magnificent
a showcase for Adrienne Yorinks's textile art as Marian Wright Edelman's
Stand For Children (1998) was. Piecing together strips
and blocks of cloth that are from, or at least associated with,
26 countries (e.g., part of Kenya is African mud cloth), she creates
vibrant collages of pictorial and abstract patterns around stylized
political maps; evocative color schemes, plus fauna, convey a sense
of individuality for each nation." -- Kirkus Reviews

Stand for Children
by Marian Wright Edelman
(Hyperion, 1999)
|
|
Adults familiar with Edelman, president and founder
of the Children's Defense Fund, will hear her voice in this picture-book
call to action on behalf of children everywhere, comprising portions
of a speech she gave at a rally for children's rights advocates.
Her message of inclusion is appropriately carried out in the effective
artwork. Yorinks has contributed collages of magnificent patchwork
quilt pieces inlaid with photos of children and families from all
walks of life. -- Booklist
Stand for Children Day is June 1. Visit the Stand
for Children site for information about local events and how
you can be involved. Stand for Children is an affiliate of the Children's
Defense Fund.
